60 Minute Opera

a collaboration between the State Opera of South Australia and Various People Inc

60 Minute Opera is an opera education initiative in which established professional performers and primary, secondary and tertiary students work together to create compelling and slightly irreverent educational versions of mainstage State Opera productions.

Each opera is arranged as a one-hour interactive performance and given a new, contemporary translation. The score is adapted to include the audience’s voices at critical moments in the plot, and the cast includes professional and advanced student performers. The 60 Minute Opera is performed at the State Opera Studio, providing a high quality introduction to the world of opera and an excellent performance opportunity for South Australia’s emerging singers.

Participating performers and students are invited to attend the final dress rehearsal of the relevant State Opera production at the Festival Theatre.

Specific performances are also open to the general public, who are given their own ‘rehearsal’ before the performance so that they too can join in.

60 Minute Operas to date include Madam Butterfly, The Barber of Seville, and  Gretel & Hansel  (2010) and Carmen: a Spanish Inquisition (2011).
